Small Business Owner? How to Increase Your Productivity

Running a small business is something that many people dream of doing. Giving up the nine-to-five world of employment and gaining the freedom to work independently is an appealing idea for many people. Undoubtedly, many benefits can be gained from launching your own business. However, running a business of your own can be challenging especially if you want to increase your productivity.

In fact, many people find life as a small business owner a steep learning curve.

There are many challenges that business owners face when trying to establish their ventures and move them onward toward greater success. One of the main barriers standing in the way of success is a lack of time.

When you have so many ideas on how to progress your business but so little time spare, it can feel impossible to grow your company further. While there will always only be 24 hours in a day, there are ways that you can increase your productivity for the benefit of your business.

The following tips will help you to work productively and ensure that your business achieves the success that it deserves:

Change Your Schedule To Increase Your Productivity

Using your time effectively is vital when attempting to increase your productivity. To ensure that you do not waste any of your working days, you may find it helpful to create a schedule and plan your workload for the day ahead in advance.

When you have a plan of action for your day, it is much easier to stay on track and work productively.

Introduce Automation

Trying to complete your work while also managing the day-to-day running of your business is incredibly time-consuming. You may find that routine admin tasks take up more time than completing your work.

Being in a situation where most of your time is spent on admin tasks can be incredibly frustrating, especially when it stands between you and making more money. One effective solution to this issue is to introduce automation to your business. Automating some of your most time-consuming tasks can make a vast difference to your productivity.

Jobs such as invoicing can be handled with ease with the help of the right software and will save you many hours of work.

Don’t Multi-Task

Multitasking is often considered the most effective way to maximize your time and get more done each day. However, multitasking often makes people work less productively than more.

Trying to complete several jobs at once may seem like a great way to complete lots of work quickly, and you will likely feel really busy during the process. But pausing and working on just one task at a time is the best way to increase your productivity. Focusing on one job and completing it thoroughly will ensure that your work is of the highest standard.

Ditching multitasking is also a great way to reduce your stress levels. Attempting several jobs at once will leave your mind scattered and will increase your stress levels. So, moving beyond multitasking will help you to improve your efficiency and calm your stress levels.

  1. I agree on the multi-tasking. If you can find a way to focus in on a task without distractions, one task at a time, you’ll inevitably be more productive. As one switches back and forth between tasks, one loses several seconds – sometimes more – adjusting to the new task. Those seconds add up.

The exception to the rule is when there is waiting involved. For instance, if you are working in an application that takes 15 seconds to save, move to the next screen, make a calculation or whatever, its’ a great idea to have a series of small tasks that you can do in between saves, screens or whatever.

    1. Hi David, welcome to Small Biz Tipster. I agree, when you do one thing at a time you have much more focus. Even waiting, otherwise, you may get side tracked, had that happen before and then had to start all over. Thanks for your input and have a great day David.
